Three reasons rib exploded: it photographs texture (flat knits disappear on camera; rib catches light), it sculpts (vertical lines visually lengthen and the structure hugs contours), and it signals knit quality the way cable knits do in fashion. It is also tactile in unboxing videos — a genuine conversion detail for DTC brands.

Rib types and where to use them

On seamless machines these are program changes, which enables the best trick in the category: mixed-structure garments — rib through the waist and legs, flat knit at the gusset, tighter density across the front — all in one tube with zero seams. The opacity caveat (and the fix)

Rib’s alternating columns stretch open more than a flat interlock, so at equal GSM a rib legging is slightly more sheer under full squat stretch. The fixes are straightforward: run the rib fabric 10–20 GSM heavier than your flat-knit equivalent, keep spandex at 22–28% so the structure recovers instead of staying open, favour mini-rib over wide rib for bottoms, and be careful with very light colours (see squat-proof logic in our spandex guide). For tops and bralettes the caveat barely applies.

Colour and dye on rib

Rib’s texture creates micro-shadowing, so the same dye reads slightly deeper and softer than on a flat face — one reason rib sets look expensive in neutral and earth tones. It also means a rib top and flat-knit legging in the “same colour” will not match perfectly — dye them as a set batch (we cover this in a dedicated guide on set colour matching).

Does ribbed fabric stretch out over time?

A quality rib with 22–28% elastane recovers like any performance knit — the structure opens under stretch and closes back. Rib that bags is a recovery-spec failure (low or fatigued elastane), not an inherent rib problem.

Is ribbed fabric less squat-proof?

At equal weight, slightly — the open-close structure passes a bit more light under full stretch. The industry fix is running rib bottoms 10–20 GSM heavier and using finer ribs; specified that way, rib leggings pass the same squat test as flat knits.

Can rib be combined with flat knit in one seamless garment?

Yes — that is the core advantage. The machine changes structure zone by zone within one tube: rib body, flat gusset, tighter front. No panels, no seams.

Is there a separate MOQ for custom rib?

On seamless the rib is a knitting program, not a bought fabric, so custom rib follows normal development MOQs (from 300 pcs per style with us) rather than fabric-mill minimums. Stock rib styles run from 50 pcs with branding.
