How to Read a Fabric Test Report Like a Buyer Who Knows
Every factory can send you a swatch. Serious ones can send a test report — and the difference between brands that get burned and brands that don’t is usually whether anyone read it. Five minutes here makes you the buyer who does.
Quick answer: Read five results in order: composition (does the % match the spec you were quoted?), GSM (within ±5% of spec), stretch & growth (growth ≤8% per ASTM D2594), pilling (≥grade 4, ISO 12945-2), and colourfastness (≥grade 4 to washing/rubbing, ISO 105 series). Anything missing, unbranded, or reported without the test standard named is the red flag — a real lab report always names the method.
What a real report looks like
A credible report states the test standard for every line (ASTM/ISO/AATCC number), the lab and date, the specimen description, and numeric results — not adjectives. In-house factory lab reports are normal and useful for development; third-party reports (SGS, Intertek, BV-type labs) are the standard for bulk on bigger programs. “Quality tested — passed” on a one-line PDF is not a report.

The red flags
No standard named next to a result (untestable claim). Composition tested but different from the quote — the classic downgrade is quoted 75/25 arriving as 80/20 with cheaper elastane. Pilling reported at 2,000 cycles only when your spec says 5,000. A report older than the fabric lot — reports describe a lot, not a fabric forever; bulk needs bulk-lot testing. Missing growth on a legging fabric — the single most-skipped test, and the one that predicts bagging knees.
