1 · The light test (opacity)
Stretch a single layer over your hand and hold it toward a light source or bright window. If you can see skin texture or knuckle definition through moderate stretch, it will be see-through in a squat. This is a direct proxy for fabric density: our published floors are ≥190 GSM for black, ≥220 for mid colors, ≥240 for light and nude shades — light colors always need more, which is why the classic failure is a pale legging that photographed beautifully. 2 · Stretch-and-look (knit density)
At full stretch, a quality knit stays visually even — a cheap one “grins,” opening into a grid of holes with a sheen change. Grin-through at hand-stretch predicts grin-through on the body.
3 · The recovery snap
Stretch a section firmly, hold ten seconds, release. Quality fabric snaps back flat almost instantly; poor fabric returns slowly or stays slightly distorted. In the lab this is stretch-and-growth testing — the spec we hold is growth ≤8% after repeated extension. Bagging knees and a sliding waistband are this test failing in slow motion.
4 · The gusset check
Look inside the crotch for a diamond-shaped panel. A gusset spreads stress, improves fit and removes the four-seam junction that causes both discomfort and the dreaded front crease — on seamless leggings it is typically knitted in or set back. 5 · Weight in hand
You cannot weigh fabric in a store, but comparison works: hold two similar leggings, one per hand. Performance-weight fabric (220+ GSM) has unmistakable substance; tissue-weight fabric feels like hosiery. Density is expensive — it is the first thing cut when a price needs to drop. 6 · Surface and pilling risk
Rub the inner thigh area of the fabric against itself for a few seconds and inspect. Any fuzz already forming on the rack — especially on brushed or ribbed textures — is an early warning. The lab spec is a pilling grade of 4 or better after 5,000 abrasion cycles; you are approximating that with friction and eyesight.
7 · The label read
Thirty seconds of reading beats any ad: fiber — nylon (polyamide) hands softer, drier and more matte than polyester at the same weight; elastane share — roughly 20–25% for compression, under 15% signals loungewear stretch; care label — specific, confident instructions (cold wash, no softener, hang dry) usually mean the brand actually tested the fabric’s limits.
8 · Inside-out and seams
Turn one leg inside out. On seamless: even, regular knit courses, no loose yarn tails, cleanly finished waistband channel. On cut-and-sew: flatlock seams with dense, even stitching and no puckering. Mess on the inside is the most reliable predictor of mess after ten washes.

What price does — and does not — tell you
Price correlates with quality loosely at the extremes and barely at all in the middle.
