Knit-In Logos: How Jacquard Branding Works on Seamless

The most premium logo in activewear is not printed on the garment — it is knitted into it. Here is how jacquard branding works on circular seamless machines, and when it beats a print.

Quick answer: A jacquard logo is created by the knitting program itself: needles are selected individually so your mark appears as a structure or shade change woven into the fabric — most often tone-on-tone (matte-on-shine or rib-on-flat). It cannot crack, peel or wash off because it is not applied to the fabric — it is the fabric. Cost impact is mainly one-time programming, not per-piece, which makes it surprisingly accessible from normal custom MOQs.

What a knit-in logo actually is

On a circular seamless machine every needle is individually selectable. A jacquard program uses that selection to change the knit structure — or feed a second yarn — exactly where your artwork sits. The result reads as a logo in relief, a shade shift, or a texture band: waistband wordmarks, repeating monograms, a mark at the calf or underband.

Jacquard vs printed branding

Durability: a knit-in mark survives every wash the garment does — there is nothing to crack or peel, which is the classic failure of heat-transfer logos. Hand-feel: zero added layer, so the waistband stays soft against skin. Cost structure: printing costs per piece; jacquard costs mostly once, in programming and knitting time. For the print side of the decision — sublimation, screen, heat transfer — see print methods compared.

Design limits to respect

Jacquard is knitting, not printing, so it has a resolution: fine serif type and tiny detail blur below roughly 5–8 mm letter height; gradients are out (structure is binary — a needle knits one way or the other); and each extra colour is a real yarn with real feeding constraints, so most programs stay within two shades. Logos also sit best in low-stretch zones — a mark on a maximum-stretch panel distorts on the body, which is a placement decision made at the tech pack stage.

What it does to MOQ and lead time

Because the change is a program rather than a tool or screen, jacquard branding fits inside normal development: from 500 pcs per style on custom programs with us, with the logo proofed on the actual machine during sampling (7–10 days). Stock styles keep print or label branding at 50 pcs — jacquard is the step you take when the line is proven.

How Yesseam runs it

We program tone-on-tone and two-colour jacquard in-house on the same machines that knit the garment — logo placement, letter height and stretch-zone checks happen in the knitting program review before a single sample is made.

FAQ

Will a knit-in logo peel or fade?

No — it is a structure in the fabric, not a layer on it. It lasts exactly as long as the garment. Colour behaviour follows the yarns themselves, which is why tone-on-tone (same yarn, different structure) is the most bulletproof version.

How small can a jacquard logo be?

Practical minimum letter height is around 5–8 mm depending on gauge; below that, knit resolution blurs fine detail. Bold, simple marks reproduce best — think wordmark, not fine crest.

Does jacquard branding raise the MOQ?

Not meaningfully — it is a programming change, not new tooling. It rides on normal custom-development minimums (500 pcs per style with us) rather than adding its own.

Can you jacquard a gradient or multi-colour logo?

No — knit structure is binary per needle, and each colour is a physical yarn. Two shades is the practical ceiling; gradients belong to sublimation printing instead.
